Temporary exposure of the Lower Greensand-Gault Clay transition

16:33 Feb 27 2014 Bowls Club, Wear Bay Road, Folkestone CP, Shepway, Kent, South East England, England, CT19 6BL, United Kingdom

Description
Strong winds and exterme high tides revealed the transition from the Lower Greensand Folkestone beds (A poorly cemented course sand) to the Gault Clay (a fossiliferous soft grey clay). The junction is marked by a yellow coloured line known as the 'sulphur band' although this term is something of a misnomer as the colour is only there as a sulphur rich reaction product of the oxidisation of the abundant pyritized wood in the layer.
